Let's take a look at some of the many different parks and nature reserves on Long Island:
- The Big Duck – 1012 NY-24, Flanders, NY 11901
One of Long Island's most noteworthy landmarks, The Big Duck is a park and historic site of its own. In fact, it is considered the most famous landmark on the island and is the site of numerous Parks Department events each year. That includes the annual holiday lighting! There's even a shop on site where you can grab a stuffed duck.
- Arthur Kunz Country Park – Landing Road, Smithtown, NY 11787
Arthur Kunz Country Park is the place to go to enjoy Nissequogue River views that will make any activity that much more enjoyable. Aside from the river frontage, you can also explore 93 acres of mainly forested property. There are tidal creeks, rolling hills, hidden valleys, and small ponds rich with lots of local wildlife.
- Belmont Lake State Park – Southern State Parkway Exit 38, North Babylon, NY 11703
Belmont Lake State Park is a day-use park that encompasses the popular Carli's Creek and Belmont Lake. The land spreads softly across a beautiful 460-acre span. It was established as a park in 1926 and became the Long Island regional headquarters for state parks in 1935. Today, families use it for outdoor gatherings and picnics.
- Berkeley Jackson State Park – 245 Manor Road, Huntington, NY 11743
Berkeley Jackson State Park is an area of 130 acres that's especially popular for hiking. There is a central hiking trail that winds throughout the property, just under two miles in length. Elsewhere on the property, you have a chance to visit the Manor Farm, a former working farm that has been restored to its circa 1860 appearance.
- Bethpage State Park – 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale, NY 11735
Bethpage State Park is known as "The People's Country Club" because it has been the place where people from all over Long Island and throughout New York can go to experience some of the best public golf facilities in the United States. There are five entire 18-course layouts to choose from, some dating back to the 1930s.
- Caleb Smith Memorial Park Preserve – Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown, NY 11787
Caleb Smith Memorial Park Preserve is one of the four major nature preserves on Long Island. Stretching across nearly 550 acres, it has some of the state's most picturesque views and is beloved by photographers and birdwatchers. Fly fishing on the Nissequogue River is available in season, and kids can fish on the Willow Pond.
- Camp Hero State Park – 1898 Montauk Highway, Montauk, NY 11954
Camp Hero State Park is known for its Atlantic Ocean beachfront and its historic military installation. At 415 acres, there's always something new to see. An extensive trail system supports hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Anglers are attracted to some of the world's best surf fishing spots.
