Rockville Centre (RVC) is located on the Babylon line, which is essentially the powerhouse of the LIRR.

• The Benefit: Trains run almost constantly. During peak hours, if you miss a train, another is usually coming within 20 minutes. It's a straight shot to the city in about 35 to 40 minutes.

• The Catch: Parking. You need a village permit, and while they aren't overly expensive, spots can be tight. You have to be an early bird to guarantee your spot.

Baldwin: The Best Kept Secret

Just one stop away from RVC is Baldwin.

• The Benefit: The commute time is almost identical to Rockville Centre, but the parking is significantly easier. By driving just five minutes down the road, you can often save yourself a major morning headache.

The Long Beach Branch: Oceanside, East Rockaway, and Lynbrook

If you are looking at towns like Oceanside, East Rockaway, or Lynbrook, you are dealing with a different animal.

• The Benefit: It is often a much quieter line. This means you are almost guaranteed a seat, which is a huge plus if you like to work or nap on your way in.

• The Catch: Frequency. These trains run less often than the Babylon line. You have to live by the schedule here; you can't just wander onto the platform and expect a train to be waiting.

The "Door-to-Desk" Test

My advice is simple: Don't buy a house based on a Google Maps estimate. Before you close, do a "Door-to-Desk" test. Drive to the station at 7:00 AM, try to find parking, and walk to the platform. See how it actually feels to make that trek.

The big display starts at 9:30 PM on July 4, 2025, but organizers recommend arriving early as the parking areas fill up quickly.

• Fabulous 4th of July Race – 98 Lauelton Blvd., Long Beach, NY, 11561
  The Fabulous 4th of July Race is the perfect opportunity for some healthy, invigorating fun on the morning of the Fourth of July, before you dig into all of the delicious food and drink at celebrations later in the day. Race options include a 1-kilometer fun run for kids under 16 years old, which starts at 8:00 AM, and the full 4-kilometer run, which follows at 8:30 AM, both on July 4, 2025. The event takes place rain or shine, and you can reserve your spot online.

• Long Island Ducks Postgame Fireworks – 3 Court House Dr., Central Islip, NY 11722
  The Long Island Ducks don't have a home game on the Fourth of July this year, but they'll be hosting the Staten Island Ferryhawks from July 1-3, 2025, with very special Long Island Ducks Postgame Fireworks after each game. If you or your kids love baseball, the Ducks offer affordable family fun all summer long. Each game in the series starts at 6:35 PM, with fireworks to follow soon after the final pitch has been thrown.

  The Long Island Road Runners Club is dedicated to making fitness fun for Long Island residents. Their Wednesday Night Summer series offers the chance to participate in casual 5K or 1-mile walk/run races through Eisenhower Park once a week until August 13th. Tickets for the 5K cost $18.23 apiece while tickets for the 1-mile race cost $23.45.   FunFest Long Island is back in town for ten days of fun starting on June 12th! The fairgrounds are open from 5 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and from 3 PM to 11 PM on weekends.
