Long island Museum

If you're looking for some fun, family-friendly things to do with kids on Long Island, our real estate agents recommend visiting one of Nassau County's many excellent museums.

Exploring topics ranging from art and history to aviation and railroads, Nassau County museums offer a chance to have fun, learn a little something, and bask in some glorious air conditioning on a hot summer day. Check out these museums in Nassau County.

  • Science Museum of Long Island - 1526 N Plandome Rd, Manhasset, NY 11030
One of the first spots on any list of Nassau County museums should be the Science Museum of Long Island. It's an especially great option for kids, offering children's programs, classes, and events on topics ranging from gardening and pollinators to dinosaurs and geology. The Museum even hosts kids' summer camps. The Science Museum of Long Island has been helping entertain and educate for more than 60 years.

  • Wantagh Museum - 1700 Wantagh Ave, Wantagh, NY 11793
Managed by the Wantagh Preservation Society, the Wantagh Museum is a fascinating site dedicated to Long Island's railroad history. Operated as a nonprofit agency and founded in 1965, the museum is housed in three historic structures: the Old Wantagh Rail Road Station, the "Jamaica" Parlor Car, and a recreated 1904 Wantagh Post Office. The museum and its grounds house a wealth of railway-related artifacts.

  • Nassau County Museum of Art - One Museum Dr, Roslyn, NY 11576
Anyone with an interest in art should set aside some time to explore the Nassau County Museum of Art. Housed in a historic mansion on the 145-acre former Frick "Clayton" Estate, the museum includes a collection of 19th and 20th-century American and European art. Rotating exhibitions by contemporary artists are also frequent, and the museum is surrounded by an outdoor arboretum and sculpture garden.

  • African American Museum of Nassau County - 110 N Franklin St, Hempstead, NY 11550
A centerpiece of Long Island art and culture since 1970, the African American Museum of Nassau County offers a range of cultural and community-based events and exhibits. Ever-changing art exhibits highlight the works of local and national African American artists in this 6,000-square-foot space. Annual events at the museum celebrate Black History Month as well as the lives of historical figures.

  • Cradle of Aviation Museum - Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Garden City, NY 11530
Long Island's contributions to the history of aviation are often overlooked, but not at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. This expansive museum includes eight unique exhibit galleries and houses 75 authentic aircraft and spacecraft that span the entire history of American aviation. Visitors can actually climb into the cockpits of a dozen such aircraft, which are just a few of the 30-plus hands-on exhibits at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

  • Garvies Point Museum & Preserve - 50 Barry Dr, Glen Cove, NY 11542
Equal parts museum and park, the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve highlights Long Island's history and geology as well as its beautiful landscape. The museum overlooks Hempstead Bay on Long Island's North Shore, and it houses a large collection of Native American artifacts from the area. In addition to being a center for researching local geology and archeology, the museum is surrounded by 62 acres of woods and meadows with 5 miles of trails.
