Long Island is an incredible place to live, especially in the summer. The warmer months allow you to really enjoy the cool breeze coming off the water, as well as the many gorgeous trees and flowers that bloom in the local parks. If you're in the mood for golf but don't have time to play a full 18 holes, then Christopher Morley Park is the place to go. This 98-acre park has a 9-hole, par-30 course. The varied terrain and stunning scenery make it a popular choice among local golfers.
When you're finished golfing, you can enjoy the park's one-mile Fitness Trail, play a game of tennis on one of the indoor courts, or try your hand at paddleball. - Long Island Aquarium: 431 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901
The Long Island Aquarium is a great place to see and learn about the various creatures that dwell in the world's oceans. You can see penguins, sea lions, sharks, and even a variety of aquatic bugs. Visit in the afternoon, and you'll likely get to see a seal training and feeding session.
The Long Island Aquarium offers free admission on your birthday. Otherwise, tickets are $48.99 for adults and $34.99 for children ages 3 - 12. You can buy tickets in advance on the aquarium's website. - Custer Observatory: 1115 Main Bayview Rd., Southold, NY 11971
The Custer Observatory is a public observatory where you can use telescopes to view the stars and cosmos. This is a great place to catch a meteor shower or see Mars and Venus in their full beauty. The observatory is open every Saturday evening from 7 pm - 12 am.
The grounds around the Custer Observatory are also gorgeous. They're planted with various wildflowers, and they have walking trails weaving through them. While there is no fee to visit the observatory, donations are accepted. - Montauk Point Lighthouse: 1000 Montauk Hwy., Montauk, NY 11954
The Montauk Point Lighthouse, located on the easternmost point of Long Island, was built in 1792. It was the first lighthouse in New York and was named a National Historic Landmark in 2012. Today, the lighthouse operates as a museum where you can learn not only about its construction but also about Long Island's maritime history.
The Montauk Point Lighthouse offers an amazing 360-degree view of the ocean and Long Island. It still has an operational light, which flashes every five seconds. The grounds and museum are open daily from 10:30 am - 4:20 pm. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. - Bethpage Bikeway: Manetto Hill Rd. and Woodbury Rd., Woodbury, NY 11797
If you're in the mood to go bike riding, there's no better choice than the Bethpage Bikeway. It starts in Woodbury and runs 13 miles to the intersection of Merrick Rd. and Ocean Ave. in Massapequa. The surface is paved in asphalt and is in good condition, so you should have no trouble on your road bike, hybrid, or mountain bike.
The Bethpage Bikeway weaves through the Massapequa Preserve and Bethpage State Park. So, you'll pass public restrooms and drinking fountains along the way. You can expect to see lots of birds and other wildlife.
