Long Island Surf

The gnarliest waves aren't found only on the West Coast. This summer, hang ten at these amazing surfing beaches around Long Island that are recommended by our real estate agents.

  • Sunken  Meadow State Park - Rte. 25A & Sunken Meadow Pkwy., Kings Park, NY 11754
Sunken Meadow State Park, with its stunning views of Long Island Sound, features a wide range of activities on land and water. In addition to a popular swimming beach, there's a convenient launching spot on the eastern side of the park for surfing and windsurfing, along with kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Stroll along the boardwalk or take part in a lively pick-up game of soccer or softball. Sunken Meadow is also home to a 27-hole golf course that accommodates players of all skill levels. Park hours are sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Vehicle use/entry fees are $8-$10.

  • Hither Hills State Park - 164 Old Montauk Hwy., Montauk, NY 11954
Looking for a great place for a staycation? Hither Hills State Park has an 189-site campground right alongside the ocean so surfing is only steps away each morning. Kids can keep busy on the swimming beach, playground, and playing fields. Be sure to explore the "walking dunes" as well as woodlands filled with Russian olive, oak, shad, and pine trees. Hither Hills is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Fees are $10 per day for park entrance and $35 per night for camping.

  • Coopers Beach - 268 Meadow Ln., Southampton, NY 11968
Find out first-hand why many consider Coopers Beach to be the best beach in the Hamptons. During your surf outing, you may find yourself sharing the waves with frolicking whales and dolphins while stunning historic mansions make for a beautiful background. Refuel with food and beverages at Serenity, the onsite eatery that frequently features live music. The beach is open 24/7, with a parking fee charged for non-residents.

  • Georgica Beach - 219 Lily Pond Ln., East Hampton, NY 11937
The incredible scenery surrounding Georgica Beach draws both residents and visitors alike. Adjacent Georgica Pond, a serene coastal lagoon enjoyed by kayakers, counts Steven Spielberg, Martha Stewart, and Calvin Klein among its notable homeowners. Surfers and boogie boarders head out for the waves off the 300-foot beach on the Atlantic Ocean side. Kids love searching for seashells in the pristine white sands, while the beach's natural stone jetty is a well-known fishing spot. The beach is open 24/7, with a parking fee charged for non-residents.

  • Camp Hero State Park - 1898 Montauk Hwy., Montauk, NY 11954 The fascinating backstory of Camp Hero State Park incorporates an important part of local history. During the 1930s and 1940s, the site held a military base that has since been registered as a National Historic Site. Some of the radar equipment and gun casements can still be seen on the grounds. Today, the 415-acre park is treasured for its dramatic variety of landscapes, including maritime forests and freshwater wetlands. In addition to being a top location for surfing, pet-friendly Camp Hero is home to an extensive network of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Park hours are sunrise to sunset daily, and vehicle use/entry fee is $8.
